Our Story

Our Beginnings...

Receiving jewelry is one of the most memorable events of a lifetime. Since 1943 Price’s Fine Jewelry has served the people of Detroit Lakes and the surrounding community with cutting edge fine jewelry designs and outstanding customer service. While we have evolved into modern business operations and technology, we have remained steadfast in our foundational principles of integrity, trust and truth in pricing.

Our story unfolds in 1898 when Sylvester Price graduated from the Bradley Institute as a watchmaker. His humble start was the cornerstone of Price’s Fine Jewelry as we know it today. His son Kenneth, together with his wife Clarissa, were the first husband-wife team and founders of Price’s Jewelry in Detroit Lakes, along with their son Gerald. Gerald bought into the company as a teenager with $200, which he saved from his Detroit Lakes paper route.  Gerald “Jerry” married Ruth Hanson in 1952 and they became the second Price couple to work jointly in the business.

Other than his brief two years of service in the US Army, Jerry was a dedicated owner, manager, jeweler, gemologist, and watchmaker. Today Jerry is considered “retired,” but recognized for his extensive involvement in the jewelry industry as a Registered Jeweler, Past President of the Minnesota Watchmakers and the Minnesota Jewelers Board of Directors. Gerald and Ruth have faithfully served in various civic organizations in Detroit Lakes and Minnesota. Ruth was the bookkeeper for the business through several of the years, but her most devout position was as wife and mother to their four children - Steve, Lynnette,

Roger and Cheryl. While all of the children were involved in the business over the years, Roger was the one who took over leading the charge into the future. The legacy continues today with Roger, who in his childhood showed an aptitude in the goldsmith department, and his wife Anita carrying on the traditions of the family business. Roger began his venture in the business during junior high, learning goldsmith skills from his grandfather and father.

Together they were crucial mentors for Roger, instilling a strong work ethic and family values that continue today.

Anita started her journey with the Price family in 1989 when she became a part-time employee while attending Detroit Lakes High School. As time progressed, a relationship blossomed between Roger and Anita and they began dating some years later while she was attending Concordia College. Anita completed her college degree in Elementary Education and destiny had its way when they married in August of 1996.

Roger went on to graduate from Minneapolis Technical Institute with an emphasis on jewelry manufacturing and repair. In addition to his training and commitment to continuous education, Roger now holds the title of “Master Goldsmith.” Roger is highly respected in the jewelry industryfor his eye for superior craftsmanship in diamond setting and goldsmith work.

Roger and Anita are proud to be the third husband-wife team to oversee the family business. Their three children Kelvin, Breanna, and Kylee are seen from time to time in the background of the business.

It is with confidence and humility we continue our legacy of the jewelry business…one that was begun by our forefathers through faith, hard work, courage and sacrifice. It is our prayer that God will continue to bless our family and devoted staff in our work so that we may be a greater blessing in His Kingdom.
